Common Mistakes while Taking Decisions

  1. Holding out for the perfect decision. Accept that you might be wrong. Mistakes are part of learning.
  2. Failing to face reality. Distinguish facts from opinions. We tend to see things as we wish they were. (75% of drivers think they are above average behind the wheel, which is statistically impossible.)
  3. Falling for self-deception. How a situation is presented may affect our decisions. (More patients opt for surgery when told the survival rate is 68% than when told that the mortality rate is 32%.)
  4. Following the crowd.
  5. Rushing and risking too much. Rushing means taking unnecessary risks.
  6. Relying too heavily on intuition. Intuition should not outweigh analytical thinking.
  7. Being married to our own ideas. We stick with prior decision even if it clearly inefficient or harmful.
  8. Paying little heed to consequences.
  9. Overvaluing consensus.
  10. Not following through.
